Latest Updates: Welding PPE Safety Standards & Compliance
Stricter Standards on Welding Helmets and ADFs
Across the UK and EU, updates to EN 379 and EN 175 have raised performance requirements for auto-darkening filters (ADFs) and welding helmets. Manufacturers now need to demonstrate higher optical quality ratings (1/1/1/1) and faster switching speeds to reduce eye fatigue and protect welders from harmful UV/IR radiation. These updates are crucial for employers to meet their obligations under the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended) in the UK and equivalent EU directives.
Enhanced Respiratory Protection Requirements (EN 12941/12942)
Amendments to EN 12941 (PAPR with loose-fitting hoods) and EN 12942 (PAPR with tight-fitting masks) set stricter benchmarks for filtration efficiency, face seal integrity, and airflow stability. Welding fumes — now classified by the HSE as carcinogenic under COSHH — mean employers must provide PAPRs or equivalent respiratory protection with assigned protection factors (APFs) suitable for welding processes.
Updates to Protective Clothing Standards: ISO 11611 & 11612
Revisions to ISO 11611:2015 (protective clothing for welding) and ISO 11612:2015 (heat and flame protection) have introduced more rigorous testing for flame spread, radiant heat resistance, and protection against molten metal splash. Welders’ jackets, hoods, and trousers must meet these updated standards to ensure compliance and reduce burn injuries.
Increased Enforcement by the HSE
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has intensified inspections of welding environments, focusing on the correct selection, certification, and maintenance of PPE — particularly respiratory protection under Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH). Employers found using non-compliant equipment or failing to provide adequate protection risk substantial fines or prosecution.
